Five signs your dog is enjoying the pool

Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise a dog can get — low-impact, tiring in the good way, and kind to joints. But not every dog loves the water on the first try, and a good session depends on reading the dog honestly rather than pushing.

Five signs a dog is genuinely enjoying the pool: a loose, wagging tail; a relaxed open mouth rather than a tight closed one; choosing to go back towards the water on their own; steady, even paddling instead of frantic splashing; and a willingness to play or fetch once they are in.

Three signs it is time to get out: a tucked tail and pinned-back ears; trying to climb onto the handler or scramble out; and heavy, laboured breathing that does not settle when they rest at the edge. Any one of these means stop, dry off and try again another day.

First-timers always start slow — a life jacket, a shallow entry and a handler in the water the whole time. Confidence in the pool is built one short, happy session at a time, never forced.
