Packing list for your dog's first boarding stay

The first boarding stay is usually harder on the owner than the dog. A little preparation makes drop-off calmer for both of you and helps your dog settle into the new routine quickly.

What to bring: your dog's usual food measured out for the length of the stay, so their stomach is not upset by a sudden change; any medication with clear written instructions; the vaccination record; and one familiar-smelling item like a blanket or an unwashed t-shirt, which is more comforting than any new toy.

What to leave at home: brand-new food or treats you have not tried before, anything your dog can destroy and swallow when unsupervised, and expensive bedding you would be upset to see chewed. Bowls and clean bedding are provided.

At drop-off, keep it short and matter-of-fact. Long, emotional goodbyes tell a dog that something is wrong. Hand over, share the routine, and trust the updates — a photo or a quick video each evening usually settles the nerves that remain.
